I earlier replied to this question by e-mail. Newent provides the finest example of an organised community producing local food, for example around the Scar area – this aspect is annually reinforced with the Onion Festival. As My Grandmother was born at the Poykes (1868) we (albeit much later) retained great interest and often visit this favourite of all market towns. Once I assisted a friend with information, because at the time those who worked the Newent allotments feared losing their gardens to development.
Interesting Question rhian. I think you can take out the name Newent and put in any other towns name and the answer will be the same. There are people everywhere who need food and shelter for one reason or other.
As the representative for Newent Central I am aware that some in the District think Newent “well off” compaired to other towns in the Dean. However as a Trustee of the Newent United Charities i have listened to petitions from needy causes which easily destroy this myth. St Mary’s Church in Newent has with support from local businesses set up a support group known as “The Lord’s Larder”, which helps those in need locally.
So the answer to your question is: Yes, there are some that do
Food and Shelter are the essence of happy living. As Len has stated there are young people in Newent and in most other ares who are living on the poverty line and do not have decent housing. As councillors we all work together to try and improve the quality of life for the ones who do not have adequate homes or healthy food/lifestyles.
