commented on 9 Oct 2010: I felt passionate about many things and wanted to make a difference especially helping the more vunerable in our community .For example I was concerned about the lack of housing advice and accomodation for young people and wanted to do something about it. A councillor left in Cinderford and I was chosen as the Labour Party candidate and got elected in Cinderford , thinking that I could change things. It came as quite a shock when I found out how difficult making things happen is, however I am still there trying to influence decision making and helping people when they ask for assistance. I did push for a Young Single Homeless project which the District Council helped fund for many years and the Council is still looking at trying to find money for a FOYER in the area. This would be work and training based accomodation.

Because I felt that I could help people. There were a lot of issues, particularly with planning, that I was asked to help with – and still am!

It was a long time ago. I was unhappy at the way the Council decided who was to get a council house. At the time, local councillors met in area letting committees to allocate houses. It seemed to me that this was open to abuse. It seemed that those people who knew a councillor or who lobbied hard were more likely to receive a council house than those in genuine need.
I’m glad that when I was elected, my political group was in the majority and that old system was changed.
In the 19 years since I was elected I have come to realise just what a difference good responsive local government can make to the quality of life of local people.
